The Green File: Shelton's losing more than just another store

 

Old Town Hobby, a fixture on Railroad Avenue in downtown Shelton for more than 10 years, will shut its doors for a final time on March 20.

 

The hobby and art supply firm, which was filled with model kits, games, puzzles and lots of other cool stuff, these days is busy paring down its inventory in preparation for closing.

 

Late last August owner Richard Bidwell decided the best idea would be to close his shop. "Having a retail business, a sole proprietorship, requires a lot of sacrifice," Bidwell said.

 

When he first started, on November 2, 1999, the financial and emotional toll as well as the demands on his time were worthwhile, but gradually the effort wore him down.

Hiker Found Dead in Olympic National Forest Identified

 

A hiker found dead in the Olympic National Forest Monday has been identified. Mason County Coroner Wes Stockwell says the dead man is Paul Templeton Holm, 71 of Rochester. According to Stockwell, at approximately 3 pm Monday, Holm had been hiking alone in the national forest on a trail near the Big Creek Campground off of Forest Service Road 24.

Shelton School Board Gets Look at New Director District Boundaries

 

The Shelton School Board got its first look at the proposed new Director District boundaries Tuesday night. Last fall, voters authorized the School District to change its school board configuration from five specific Director Districts to three specific Director Districts and two at-large. Since then, Assistant Superintendent Gordy Hansen has been creating the new Director District boundaries that have approximately the same population and coincide with voting precinct boundaries.

High School Sports Report for 3/10/10: NM boys' Coach steps down ... 2A & 3A State Basketball Tournaments underway


After 29 seasons (11 in Belfair), North Mason boys' basketball Coach Larry Skogstad is stepping down from coaching. Skogstad told the team about his decision after Saturday's loss to Steilacoom in the District Tournament. The 59-year-old Skogstad will still teach at North Mason High School until he retires but stepping away from coaching will allow him time to watch his youngest son, Brett who led the Bulldogs in scoring the last four seasons, play basketball in college.

Shelton School Board Approves Early Release Every Other Friday Next School Year

 

In order to allow teachers time for collaboration and professional learning, the Shelton School Board has approved hour and a half early release every other Friday during the 2010/2011 school year.  The goal of this early release is to improve teacher effectiveness in the classroom.

New Principal Selected for North Mason High School

 

The North Mason School District has selected Chad Collins to succeed Ted Jansen as principal of North Mason High School. Collins is currently assistant principal at North Kitsap High School. Prior to that, he spent a short time as interim assistant principal, and served as dean and science teacher at Gig Harbor High School, and was a teacher at Maple Lane School.

Petition for Four-Way Stop Presented to City Commission


The Shelton City Commission has been presented with a petition to turn the intersection at Shelton Springs Road, North 13th, and Alpine Way into a four-way stop. The petition has 133 signatures from residents in the area behind Olympic College Shelton, as well as students at the college and Shelton High School. Michael Burt signed the petition and told the City Commission Monday that the intersection is dangerous and most residents turn right and go the long way around instead of trying to turn left or go across.
