Written by Dedrick Allan

In High School Sports over the weekend:

Five Shelton wrestlers advanced to the Regionals. The Highclimbers are Ty McCullough, who placed first at the Sub-Regionals Saturday; Jonathon Dennis; Colby Barber; Taylor Gettle; and Kala Shivers, who placed second in the Sub-Regional.

North Mason is sending 13 wrestlers to the Class 2A Regionals. Four Bulldogs won sub-regional championships Saturday. They are Zac Joaquin (112), Pedro Joaquin (119), Robert Vandling (215) and Jake Foley (285). Other North Mason wrestlers advancing to regionals include Rene Gaspar, Sam Newman, Craig Guse, Ryan Kuhn and Patricia Costello, all of whom placed second Saturday; and Brian McCarty, Drew Hicks, Cody Nelson and C. Neisen.

The Mary M. Knight boys' basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a 58 to 36 thumping of Wishkah Valley Saturday and made the Sub-Districts. The Owls held the Loggers to two points in the first quarter and five in the third and were up 25 points at one point in the game. The Matlock area school had three players score in double figures led by Jimmy Kiliz's 22 points. Erick Johnson and Sean Sexton had 15 points each. Sexton also had five blocks. Mary M. Knight controlled the glass, out rebounding Wishkah 58 to 27, with 17 offensive rebounds. With the win, the Owls take fourth place in the Coastal League and make the Class 1B Southwest North Sub-District. They play at Oakville Tuesday night in a winner to District-loser out game. Oakville took the League's top spot on a coin flip Sunday as the Acorns, Taholah and Lake Quinault finished the season in a three-way tie. The Elks and Chitwhins also play Tuesday night.

The Mary M. Knight girls' basketball team ended its season with 42 to 24 loss to Wishkah Valley Saturday. The Lady Owls held the Loggerettes to five points in the first quarter but couldn't maintain the lead as the girls from Matlock only managed single digit scoring the rest of the way. Mary M. Knight was led by ten points from Brittney Harris and eight from Linda Cook.

Shelton has a new boys' soccer coach: Chad Sweitzer. Sweitzer is a graduate of Shelton High School and has been working with the youth programs in the area. He also has a son in the Highclimbers' soccer program.

Shelton has also selected a new Distance Coach: John Johnson. Johnson works at CHOICE High School.

The Highclimbers still need fill the fastpitch softball coaching position and are close to making that decision. And there are some vacant assistant coach positions.

Other Shelton High School notes: the cheer squad placed sixth in the state recently and the Highclimber Dance team has qualified for districts.
